Osprey completes the UK’s first operation using electric-powered SPMT.

Osprey has successfully delivered the United Kingdom’s first operation using an electric-powered Self-Propelled Modular Transporter, marking a significant step forward in sustainable heavy transport and lifting.

The operation was delivered in Avonmouth and centred on the handling of a critical asset. The component was lifted from its storage position, positioned onto a six-axle self-propelled modular transporter, and transported to the berth before being transferred onto a barge via a controlled roll-on and roll-off operation for onward delivery to site.

Every stage of the operation, from loading and transport through to the final marine interface, was powered by an electric power pack unit, replacing conventional diesel equipment. The electric system enabled zero-emission operations while maintaining the same performance, precision and reliability expected from traditional systems.

Yannick Wörz of TII Scheuerle highlighted the importance of this step forward:
“This is the first ePPU in the UK. The difference between diesel and electric is simply the engine – it delivers the same performance, but with zero emissions and smoother operation, bringing clear benefits, especially for zero-emission job sites.”

Operating with zero emissions, the electric power pack unit allows heavy lifting and transport activities to be undertaken inside enclosed or constrained environments without the limitations associated with diesel-powered equipment. Reduced noise, smoother operation and the removal of exhaust emissions support safer, more flexible site set-ups while preserving the high levels of control required for precision movements.

The operation demonstrated seamless integration across the full logistics chain, from lifting and securing the load through to transport and the transition from land to marine. By removing interfaces and maintaining end-to-end control, Osprey reduced risk while delivering a complex movement efficiently and safely.

This first deployment marks an important step in the transition to lower emission heavy logistics. With proven performance in real-world conditions, electric-powered SPMT technology is ready to be scaled across future projects, supporting cleaner and more sustainable delivery without compromise.
