What does it mean to join Osprey?
Ben Young is a Project Engineer in Osprey’s Heavy Lift team. His journey to join Osprey Group began with a period of hands-on work experience as a teenager, providing support to a heavy transportation company. Here, he learned the basics of working with SPMTs, lifting, jacking, bespoke fabrication and many other aspects of special logistics. It was a natural progression from there into the heavy lift industry: his work experience continued alongside his A-levels where he studied a broad base of physics and mathematics. At the University of Warwick, he later studied mechanical engineering for 4 years on an integrated Masters’ degree course. This enabled him to work part-time as an Assistant Project Engineer to start with, providing a great platform with which to embark on his professional career post university.
In June 2021, Ben joined Osprey Group as a Project Engineer – working on large scale civil infrastructure projects, railways, highways, and more. One of the things that drew him to Osprey, was the business’s family values and working methods.
“I wanted to work for a firm that regularly delivered outstanding projects for its customers but could also provide an environment where I could rapidly develop my early career. At Osprey, everyone’s respected for their knowledge and there’s constantly an opportunity to learn from each other. I think clients find great value in how closely Osprey’s employees work together to successfully deliver projects.”
Like all employees, Ben’s career progression within Osprey will now follow a collaborative path. “I love the variety of projects we work on, teamwork is encouraged and the sense of being valued as an individual member of a team is huge. Everyone’s opinion is heard, and your insights are always welcomed. I’m not one of a hundred people contributing to a solution – I’m one of a close-knit team that’s actively engaged with whatever we’re working on.”
Part of Ben’s work with Osprey utilises his extensive background in 3D modelling to steer a new era in the quality of engineering solutions Osprey propose and deliver to customers. “Highly detailed 3D visualisations not only help our customers quickly understand our equipment and abilities but demonstrate the entire solution from start to finish in a clear and tangible manner. 3D engineering is not just a sales tool, it allows us to achieve previously unprecedented levels of planning and detail that ultimately lead to even smoother execution of our projects.”
The Heavy Lift teams work on the Woodsmith Mine project led to Ben and his colleagues receiving an internal award for ‘Best Run Project of 2021’ within Osprey Group.
“Supporting our customers through the very early stages of their projects, by growing just a rough idea into a complete solution, can be very rewarding. It’s fantastic to be deeply involved with the full lifecycle of projects all the way through until final completion, should that span just few days or even months. With every new project come a renewed opportunity to innovate and explore alternative thinking to optimise and arrive at a safe, efficient, and elegant solution.”
